"Of the Night" is a single by Bastille, released on the 11th October 2013 as a digital download, and then it was released on 10" picture disc vinyl on the 18th November. It was re-released on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014.
Background[]
"Of the Night" is a mash up of two 1990s dance hit songs, the 1993 hit "The Rhythm of the Night" by Italian Eurodance act Corona and the 1992 hit "Rhythm Is a Dancer" by German Eurodance group Snap!. The song was first featured on Bastille's mixtape Other People's Heartache, which was released in 2012 as a free download.
“ | That's a strange one. It's kind of a tongue-in-cheek thing that we did that kind of got out of hand. It started off because Dan got really ill when we first got signed, and so to ease his way back into vocal recording we decided to do some mixtapes using old songs that we listened to growing up. These were interesting songs you wouldn't expect us to cover and try to reinvent in a more current kind of way, and then it became one of our biggest songs. Then we started doing it live just because it was a cool song and was fun to play, and audiences started to really kind of dig it. And it all started off like a little experiment. | ” |
—Will Farquarson, talking about "Of the Night"[1]
"Of the Night" was later used in a promotional trailer for the eighth series of ITV's Dancing on Ice. It received its first radio play on Huw Stephens' BBC Radio 1 show on 9 October 2013, and was released digitally on 11 October 2013. On 15 November 2013, Of the Night EP was released, featuring three remixes of the song and a live recording of "Oblivion".
Music video[]
An official music video promoting the song was released onto YouTube on 9 October 2013. It was directed by Dave Ma (who has previously worked with Foals, Ghostpoet and Delphic), and stars American actor James Russo (Once Upon a Time in America, Django Unchained) as the main protagonist, a police detective who visits several crime scenes. The video also shows corpses singing. Mike Wass of Idolator called the video "quite possibly the most depressing video of the year."

Lyrics[]
Rhythm is a dancer,
It's a soul's companion,
People feel it everywhere,
Lift your hands and voices,
Free your mind and join us,
You can feel it in the air,
Oh oh, it's a passion,
Oh oh, you can feel it yeah,
Oh oh, it's a passion,
Oh oh, oh, oh, oh,
(THIS IS THE RHYTHM)
You can put some joy up on my face,
Oh sunshine in an empty place,
Take me too, turn to and babe I'll make you stay,
(OH YEAH)
Oh I can ease you of your pain,
Feel you give me love again,
Round and round we go,
Each time I hear you say,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life, my life, oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life, my life, oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,
Wont you teach me how to love and learn,
There'll be nothing left for me to yearn,
Think of me and burn and let me hold your hand,
Oh yeah-ah-eh,
I don't want to face the world in tears,
Please think again, I'm on my knees,
Sing that song to me,
No reason to repent,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life, my life, oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life, my life, oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah,
The rhythm of the night,
This is the rhythm of my life, my life, oh yeah,
The rhythm of my life,
This is the rhythm of the night, the night, oh yeah.
